Ranking of Vandy wins
How does today's win against the Orange compare with other Vandy wins you have seen?
The win I remember most favorably was against Duke, I believe in 1964. I think Duke was ranked #2 in college basketball at the time, but I could be wrong.

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
Sometime in the early 80s; win over then #1 Indiana. The team had been very mediocre for years and it was something of a coming out party.
Beating eventual NC Kentucky in the SECT was big, but Vanderbilt was pretty good that year so it wasn't as much a shock as this one.

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
This is a good win. We've had better. Top wins (off the top of my head)...
Beating #1 Kentucky in '93
Beating defending champs UCLA in (I think) '95.
The NC State comeback to reach the Sweet 16.
The 92-55 thrashing of Kentucky.
Beating Anthony Davis in the SEC Finals (as was already mentioned)
Beating Georgetown to reach the Elite 8
Beating #1 ranked UT
The Shan Foster Highlight Reel against Miss St.
The Corey Smith Buzzer Beater in the NIT
Beating #1 Florida (The CKS Keepaway Game)
I'm okay adding last night's win to the list, but I don't think it tops most of these.

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
I'd graduated and moved to Austin by then, but happened to be visiting town, so I was in the house for it. One of my favorites for sure!alathIN wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 5:02 am Sometime in the early 80s; win over then #1 Indiana. Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
In my mind this win is similar to the win in 2002 where we beat UK to grab the first win against them since 1993. Maybe a little higher in the drama department, but similar in that we weren't really thinking much about the tournament that season, and the win was a bit unexpected.mathguy wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 5:18 am This is a good win. Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
The 2008 win over #1 UT is probably the best ever win over the orange.
We've had other wins over #1, but UT makes it special.
Tied at 1a was the win over #1 NC in 1987. (Most memorable moment for that game...Boots Randolph played the national anthem....and the crown went wild!)
The '67 trifecta mentioned above was also marvelous.
(Note. Look in the Sports illustrated archive for a great story on that series titled "Getting the Vandy Treatment" This was from back when SI was a real, well-written and edited magazine.)

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
This is clearly the biggest win in the current era. The reasons are:
1. Proves that Stackhouse team can beat a better team
2. Shows that Vanderbilt can compete in the portal era- some of the players who helped win were transfers in
3. Restored magic to venerable good old Memorial - students and fans helped us like the good old days
4. Sent a strong message to skeptics about Vanderbilt athletics and the SEC.
5. Vindicates our AD who saw enough in coach to extend his contract prior to season start.
Conquer and prevail!

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
I'm going with last night as the best Memorial Gym win I've ever seen. And I don't make that declaration lightly.
I'm ruling out all wins that happened on the road, so that rules out the Barry Goheen Pitt game, the win over Anthony Davis, etc...
There are a lot of great games where Vandy has beaten No. 1 or highly ranked teams at home... those are all great, but...
To beat TENNESSEE, ranked No. 6, so unexpectedly... on a last-second buzzer-beater, such an unbelievable shot...
Man, I'm sorry, but last night takes the cake.
And just when I thought the Magic might be on permanent hiatus from Memorial.

I watched that video showing the end of regulation versus Pittsburgh.
Did you see that Pittsburgh still had 3 unused timeouts? Maybe Stackhouse can give lessons on saving timeouts then using them judiciously down the stretch.

Buzzer beaters
I think it’s a little better question to ask how this ranks among buzzer beating wins.
I’m a post Goheen fan, so this is number one, ahead of the Lawson over Louisville shot.

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
This is unquestionably the biggest win for CJS at Vandy, and perhaps a building block for the remainder of the season.

Why does nobody ever mention Steve Grant's three at the buzzer. The only 3 he ever shot (?)

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
I was at that game in the student section and it was amazing. If I recall Dean Smith really milked the clock at the end but we pulled out the W.
I also recall a big game from Dec 86 where we beat a highly regarded IU team with Steve Alford. The crowd hounded Alford all game. We were down at half and pulled out an exciting win. Memorial was rocking that night too. I think IU was ranked but don't recall precisely. Link to VU v IU in Dec 86

Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
Best thread in a long time! Don't forget Joe Ford's free throws to beat Kentucky at home in 1973
Re: Ranking of Vandy wins
Interestingly, that shot came as the result of a missed Georgia dunk on a breakaway that would have sealed the game for Georgia.MrMemorial wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 9:03 am Why does nobody ever mention Steve Grant's three at the buzzer. The only 3 he ever shot (?)
