Didn't we once get a commit from an extremely highly rated (like high 4 or 5) recruit that had only a few offers from lower P5 and mid major programs, and he really didn't amount to much? I think it was under the clapper, but I could be wrong.

Pretty sure you mean Simi Shittu. He had plenty of offers, though in hindsight there are some notable schools on that list that reportedly did not extend an official scholarship offer.

I think the big issue with Shittu was that he had the ACL injury in the middle of his senior year, and he just wasn't the explosive player I saw in his HS highlights when he got to Vanderbilt. Then he seemed a little out of position and lost once Garland went down. I think he more than anyone else on that team would have benefitted from Garland feeding him the ball.

I like that CJS is addressing the position that has been thin over the last two seasons - wing guard/forward. With Presley and Taylor in addition to Roberts, we now have a number of players who will compete at the 3 spot that have good size in the 6'-6" range. This is a marked difference than having multiple three guard lineups last seasons where we had Manjon, Lawrence and Thomas, and it is possible that the height difference alone will greatly improve our defense, which was disappointing for most of the year.

Last season we had the following players play the 2/3 spots: Lawrence, Thomas and Wright (they combined for 71 of the available 80 minutes at those positions). Ironically, Lawrence ended up shooting the highest percentage from three of the trio, but Wright and Thomas combined to shoot 30.6% from three on almost 300 attempts. While Wright compensated for his poor shooting with rebounding, playmaking and defense, Thomas had a bit of a rough time as his primary value derives from his three point accuracy and volume, and the former completely betrayed him last season, especially down the stretch.

It is very easy to imagine that we can get better three point accuracy, defense and rebounding from the newcomers over the combined contributions from Wrigth and Thomas. And even if one of those players has a bad season, there will be multiple options so CJS doesn't feel like he needs to play a struggling Thomas 20 mpg.
