What is the point of conference play now? It clearly means nothing now. Clemson. Vandy. Clearly demonstrated worthiness in conference. Teams we finished better than. Teams we beat. All got in the tourney.
What would be their answer to this? How would they justify?

Well, their answer would probably be something like:
If Clemson and Vandy want to leave their conferences and see if they can produce the same strength of schedule and opportunities for Quadrant 1 wins as an independent or member of a weaker conference, they are welcome to try.
The less snarky answer is that in the age of unbalanced scheduling (not every team plays all other conference teams twice) conference record can be really skewed. This is why A&M didn't get a higher seed - the SEC teams they played twice were Fla, Missouri, LSU, Auburn, and Arkansas Not exactly like us getting UK, UT, Bama, Fla and S. Carolina.
Of course, why getting UK, UT, and Bama twice didn't help us more...

With that attitude, at least 300 teams (including some that squeaked into this bracket) know they don't have a chance at a national championship and should have just given up the sport.
Save the money for a new library or another science lab.
For that matter, there should not be a Division II, Division III or NAIA because none of those teams can be NCAA Division I national champions.
When an NCAA football team loses its third game (or perhaps 4th with the expanded playoff) it should cancel the rest of the season because it no longer has a shot at the title.
Maybe we should just not have college sports altogether and draw straws to see which schools get the trophies. And without a goal of getting a college scholarship, we could abolish high school and amateur sports.
OR ... Vanderbilt fans can still root for our teams and go kick butt in the National Invitation Tournament!
