clinched a share of the 1973-1974 SEC Basketball title. And in doing,so Vandy was assured to be the SEC's representative in the upcoming NCAA Tournament in Tuscaloosa 12 days later. Vanderbilt survived a missed shot at the buzzer by Kentucky to hold on, 71-69. Vanderbilt had mauled UK in Lexington a month earlier, 82-65 but by this time Vandy was running on fumes. The "share" was clinched an hour or so earlier when Florida upset eventual co-champ Alabama, 64-61 it the Gators' house of horrors, "Alligator Alley."

As an aside, that Florida game provided something that was about as "early to mid 70's " as possible. Florida was starting up its Women's Gymnastics program and was doing a demonstration at halftime. Midway through the show, a fellow wearing only a smile ran from one baseline to an awaiting unlocked door past the other baseline.

Back to Vanderbilt, this was Senior night where Jan van Breda Kolf, the late Terry Compton, Lee Fowler, and Bill Ligon were honored.

I loved those uniforms - and those teams/players during that era.

Next year (this fall ??) will be the 50th anniversary of that title. Not only should the team be honored at a game, but the 2023-24 Commodores should wear either those white ones or the gold ones with the black and white trim at said game.

It was Jeff Fosnes with the last second 25' shot to give us the 71-69 win in Memorial in 1974 as I recall!

Yes - the gold ones were classic.
