Mir McClean, a 5'11 sophomore, has entered the transfer portal out of UConn. She is the second player to leave the Huskies in recent weeks, joining Saylor Poffenbarger, who has announced her commitment to Arkansas.
I don't think this should be taken as evidence of something rotten in Denmark. Or, in Storrs, for that matter. Mostly, I think it's just a sign of the times. Even the program many would argue is the best of all time is not immune. The door has been thrown open for players to set sail any time and any where they want.
In McClean's case, it's really probably a good thing for both parties. She came to UConn as a top 25 recruit in 2020, but she just hasn't found her place in Geno's system. She is barely seeing the floor this season even though the Huskies have suffered a rash of injuries that has left them severely shorthanded at times. Geno has talked about her athleticism and willingness/ability to rebound, but indicates he wanted her to be more well rounded and mentally tougher.
Being mentally tough at programs like UConn, South Carolina or Stanford is different. They don't start the season hoping to be a good team that competes for conference crowns. They start the season expecting to compete for a national title. Not every player, even mentally tough ones, will thrive with a Geno Auriema or Dawn Staley breathing down their neck.
Anyway, McLean is leaving. She's from Maryland, which makes you wonder if the Terps could be a logical next stop. Brenda Friese's team puts up gaudy offensive numbers, but defense if often an afterthought. You'd have to think a great athlete who is willing and able to defend and rebound would be a blessing to a team like that.
