Field of 64 rumblings

Post by Versus75 »

... UConn led Xavier 3-2 going into the ninth inning of the Big East Championship game against Xavier and sent its closer (11 saves) to the mound. Xavier scores 5 runs and wins 7-3.

Connecticut will still be a #2 seed, I expect, but Xavier is in the Field of 64.

~~~
In the AAC, South Florida (21-37 coming in) had to beat East Carolina 1 of 2 games to earn a bid. Didn't happen.
~~~

George Mason (34-25) beat St. Louis twice to win the A10. The Billikens (33-23 / RPI 224) should be out.

~~~
Miami (FL) looking good in ACC Tournament. Has already beaten NC State, Duke and Wake Forest. Plays Clemson for the championship tomorrow. On one hand, it seems that winning that game could vault the 'Canes into a National Seed. On the other hand, the committee has probably wrapped up the selections barring another Xavier-like upset.
~~~

Elon (33-21 / RPI 57) and Northeastern (43-13 / RPI 28) are playing from the Losers' Bracket in the Colonial League for the right to face UNC Wilmington (33-21 / RPI 53). Doubtful the conference gets 3 bids, but Northeastern is an enigma. The team is 7-0 versus RPI Top 50 but only second in its own conference.

~~~
Does Kent State (42-16 / RPI 44) still get into the tournament despite being bounced from the Mid-American Conference Tournament by Ball State?
~~~

Evansville (37-23 / RPI 73) has a one-game showdown with Indiana State to win the Missouri Valley Conference.

~~~
Wofford (40-19 / RPI 49) lost to Samford in the Southern Conference Tournament. Does it have enough to get in?
~~~

The Sun Belt Conference is strong this year and should quiet some of those Baseball broadcasters who refer to "Power Five" conferences as though only the top football conferences should be included. d1baseball currently ranks Coastal Carolina #7 and Southern Miss #16 and also predicts Troy (39-20 / RPI 40) as an at-large team. However, Louisiana (39-21 / RPI 59) still has a shot.

~~~
d1baseball this morning predicted 3 Big West teams making the Field of 64: Fullerton (66), Santa Barbara (54) and Irvine (50) ... presumably based on RPI. UC-San Diego leads the conference at 21-9 but is overall 34-18 with an RPI of 81. UC San Diego isn't even playing this week. Has the team been disqualified or something?
~~~ Something's gotta give in the selection process. I'm just glad that the 'Dores can finish no worse than 3-2 in the SECT and likely have wrapped up a National Seed.

If VU doesn’t receive a national seed they were hosed, because they certainly earned one.
