SEC contemplating much harsher penalties for storming the field/court

Post by AuricGoldfinger »

Teams could lose a home game if their fans rush the field or the court:

The fact that other conferences allow storming of the court / field would suggest this is an unnecessary, or at least arguable policy. The fact that the offense may be carried out by opposing fans is all the more ridiculous. Having stormed a court or two in my day, this rule strikes me as silly.

I’ve said this before:

Until the NCAA bans the activity, the SEC is only punishing usually-accepted behavior. Acting “Holier-than-Thou perhaps?

Sportscasters will describe the excitement of the (mostly student) fans as they move toward the front anticipating the court/field rush — and then the game ends with a wild party! … In most cases.

But when a few Vanderbilt students mosey down a staircase because it’s the closest path to the exits, the university is fined and the students are called thugs.

Doesn’t make sense.

Those potential penalties seem downright draconian for football with so few games. In basketball they feel less so, but still overkill.

The truth of the matter is that the only way to even hope to stop fans from doing it is to hurt their team's chances at success though.
