Wednesday Feb. 1 begins late signing period; only one signee expected (signing day thread)

Post by BrentVU »

Vandy announced 21 signees back in the early signing period. The late signing period begins Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. EST, and only one signee is expected: Bryan Longwell, LB from Nashville-Lipscomb, who committed on Sunday evening.

Will there be others? I doubt it: with 22 signees (after Longwell) for 2023 and 3 announced portal transfers (one of whom should be a PWO), Vandy has to be getting very close to the limit of 85 scholarships. But you never know.

Bryan Longwell of Lipscomb Academy has signed scholarship papers. Welcome to the #GoldStandard23 class, Bryan!

Clark Lea says, "A two-time state champion, Bryan Longwell was born to lead. He's staying home and is ready to take on the SEC. Congratulations!"

A signing day ceremony is scheduled for later today at Lipscomb Academy, where Longwell and fellow VU signee Junior Sherrill of the state champion Mustangs will both be recognized.

Barton Simmons on Bryan Longwell: "We've got some dudes coming to this LB room. Bryan is hard-wired for greatness. The tape speaks for itself. Fantastic fit for VUFB."

Some time back I mentioned Josh Palmer, WR/TE of Montgomery Catholic, as a guy with a recent 2023 offer from Vandy, the possible "Pimpton replacement." He has not announced anything yet, to my knowledge, but there is a ceremony at his high school today at 3:30 pm CT. I don't know if there would be another Vandy signee today, but if there is, this would be it.

How fitting! It looks like the #GoldStandard23 class is going to stand pat at 23 signees!

Josh is a nice 6-5, 215 exclamation point on the class.

Clark Lea: "The ultimate competitor, Josh Palmer is ready to seize this opportunity and show Nashville what he's made of. Couldn't be more excited for him to join our program!"

Barton Simmons: "3-sport athlete that will be 17 as a college freshman. Gained 20 pounds since June and only getting bigger. Big time competitor with great energy that will elevate our roster!"

My take: Ka'Morreun Pimpton was a 6-5, 215-pound tight end, and a relative unknown on the recruiting scene when he committed to Vanderbilt in the spring of 2022. As he began to put more and more dazzling catches on film his senior year, his recruiting blew up, and Vandy was ultimately unable to hold off LSU and Texas late. The (blankety-blank) signed with LSU on signing day after being committed for six months to Vanderbilt, leaving Clark Lea completely in the lurch and with a big hole at TE in the class. OK, it happens when you're competing at this level; but Vandy still needed a tight end. Palmer is the exact same build as Pimpton, but he didn't really bloom until this past year. I don't know for sure how his speed compares to Pimpton, but I know for sure that Barton Simmons knows. He had 31 Division 1 offers (including Nebraska, Minnesota, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Louisville), so it's not as if he's an unknown, but it's safe to say he was probably underrecruited. He didn't sign anywhere on early signing day. Vandy was able to come in a week ago with an offer and sweep him off his feet. Hopefully he makes every Vandy fan forget they ever heard of Pimpton.

At 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, Palmer mixes the speed and skills of a wideout with the size and toughness of a tight end and can play both inside and outside. He creates a mismatch wherever he lines up: At tight end, he can burn slower linebackers, and at receiver, he can dominate shorter cornerbacks in the air...

As a result, Palmer has had to adapt. He credits going up against LJ Green, a Georgia Tech commit, and the rest of the Knights' defensive backs in practice with raising his game. He has put on over 20 pounds of muscle since arriving at Catholic. He's grown more trust with quarterback Caleb McCreary. Johnson wasn't terribly confident in Palmer's blocking ability at first, but now, "When he gets his hands on you, he's putting you on the ground."

Tennessean subscribers should be able to read this story, as it's from the Montgomery Advertiser, a Gannett newspaper...

Josh has a younger brother O'Marion (O.J.), who is 6-foot-6. Here's a story about the two playing against each other in a recent high school basketball game...
