Coach Lea: Alexander will enroll early; Newberry flipped from Colorado, 21.68 in 200 meters; Deago Benson 10.85 in the 100 meters, and can be a physical back. Patrick Smith returns, Chase Gillespie we're excited about, redshirted last year; Dylan Betts-Pauley returns. Will count on at least one newcomer to play next fall. We want to see more long-range scores.

There is room in February to take additional players and transfers. We don't always feel adding transfers is the best course for us though. We will continue to turn over stones for February players.

Coach Lea recruited Aeneas DiCosmo out of high school and felt he was a fit. Excited there was mutual interest. Will join the team midyear.

WRs all have proven skill set. Humphreys can blow the top off of coverage. Sherrill is a guy we can move around; can get open and make people miss. Parish has lots of upside, multi-sport athlete, impressive in camp. On court he has a dynamic skill set.

At TE, Ball and Spence return. May look to run more 11 personnel (three wide receivers as opposed to two receivers and two tight ends).

QB: Four guys in the room that we have confidence in. Seals will return, I have a ton of respect for him. Swann will still have to earn it every day. Dickey and Taylor are both competitive. Good strategy is to have a starter, but we've shown we can find roles for QB's, and getting through season with one QB is sometimes not feasible.

DL: We improved in sacks this last year. We added length and athleticism, including a transfer [DiCosmo]. We have young players who will develop (mentioned Miles Capers). Want to be able to rush the passer with four DLs.


No one asked about the effect of NIL on the class; wish someone had!

Been covering Vandy recruiting a lot of years, but this is a first: a guy (Pimpton) who goes through a formal signing day ceremony at his school, and goes through the motions of signing with one college, with balloons, decorations, parents, and the cheers of the crowd... and then flips to another school a few days later.

An hour ago they had him "signed" with VU. That is now gone.

They also had us ranked 44. Now we are at 51.

It looks like the final number of Wednesday signees is 21... time to look back and recap what happened today and the last couple of days...

THE BAD: Vanderbilt lost Ka'Morreun Pimpton and Kenric Lanier at the eleventh hour; Pimpton was one of the class's highest-rated players and looked like a real difference-maker on film. Over the course of the year, Vandy had seven players who committed and de-committed, but ones that happen in the last 7 days before signing day are especially devastating.

THE GOOD: For the second year in a row, the Dores finished strong, adding eight new players to the fold after the end of the season. Getting RB Deago Benson was huge, and Jailen Ruth looks like an underrated gem as well. The Commodores addressed needs on the O-line (three late signees), D-line (three late signees including a transfer), and DB (Jalen Gilbert).

THE UNRESOLVED: After missing out on Jordon Harris to Missouri, the loss of Pimpton really hurts. They were close to signing three, but now there's only one (Kamrean Johnson). Coach Lea said that after the attrition at TE (losing Bresnahan, Schoenwald, and DeCoursey at that position), they may look hard at playing fewer double-tight end formations and spreading the field more with three receivers. That means more of a passing offense, and if Swann and Seals are the QBs, that's probably a good thing. But Vandy still may need to look to the portal for a tight end... that position is going to be very thin this spring with only Justin Ball and Cole Spence.

FINALLY, a coach that "gets" it... We finally have a coach that dipped into the deep Texas talent pool. I can't even remember if Poach did much in Texas.

On the other hand, I really like how he recruited local TN talent hard and we got a few of those.
