draft Carnage and portal impact
The draft was very good to the Vandy Brand. And very cruel to the actual players on the field aspect of 2023.
Several kids who we hoped would find their way to campus got drafted really high - and probably won’t reach the Hawk.
On the other hand, several really good transfer portal players remain unsigned. I like to think at least one or two of them were holding out for a chance to be a VandyBoy. The door has opened.
6 players/commits selected in the first round is just ridiculous. It won’t hurt future recruiting… I am hoping the Air Force all-American, Skenes, might be in play? At any rate, when our commits start signing, we will see if our staff has room for some portal maneuvers?

Re: draft Carnage and portal impact
It was 5. Three were obvious, but we lost two guys on the fence- Stewart and Schultz.
We still have a good class, but we are lagging badly in the transfer portal where LSU and Tennessee were prepared to offer NIL deals for proven talents.
Dark clouds are looming for this program. I admit that I had no idea that the NIL/transfer portal would infiltrate baseball this quickly. It's an entirely different landscape than just two years ago because of these. Corbin and company will still recruit well, but I'm not sure we can remain at or near the top by doing the same things that worked for the past 20 years.

Not totally sure we lose him. Slot is $746,800. He is a 3 star. If he comes in and does well he could improve on that. Plus, does he want to sign for slot and make $400 a week, ride buses, and stay in Motel 6's for the next three years, or come to Vandy and be treated like a king with no worries for three years?

2 Druw Jones
3 Rocker
15. Lesko
23 Barriera
25. Spencer Jones
26. Schultz
32. Stewart
Rocker was gone, but still a face of the program. Stewart was a comp pick - but a first round pick. It’s quite remarkable really.

That's just not the way things work in 2022. If a guy is getting drafted in the top 10 rounds, the team already talked to him and has a handshake deal or at least some strong indication that he'll sign.commadore wrote: ↑Mon Jul 18, 2022 2:07 pmNot totally sure we lose him. That is a lot of people to talk to, because you have no idea whether recruit #85 will be around when that pick becomes available. Does that mean you have talked to 10-15 kids and made agreements assuming they haven't been picked. Not buying it.Commodoredave wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 10:31 amThat's just not the way things work in 2022. So 15 scouts in a MLB scouting department can't reach out and talk numbers with 15 kids in a month before the draft? Gimme a break. They can pick up the phone 5 minutes before the selection and ask the number on the spot. Teams aren't going to waste picks that high, and the evidence provided by the last decade of the draft tells the tale. The outliers who don't sign are usually guys like Rocker who have medical questions that arise after the draft.commadore wrote: ↑Wed Jul 20, 2022 10:44 amThat is a lot of people to talk to, because you have no idea whether recruit #85 will be around when that pick becomes available. It wouldn't be 15. It would be 45, because you don't know if #12 will be there when it gets to you. So we will just have to agree to disagree.Commodoredave wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 10:38 amSo 15 scouts in a MLB scouting department can't reach out and talk numbers with 15 kids in a month before the draft?
