vaccinated and still came down with Covid-19, then the problem is likely more complex than previously discussed!

The vaccine doesn’t prevent people from being infected. It slows the spread of the virus through the body to keep viral load low. That might prevent infection. Or it might simply keep the infection at such a low level that the immune system keeps it in check, which would lead to minimal symptoms and less chance to infect others.
But it’s also not 100%, as is true of any vaccine. It’s only about 95% effective (vs not being vaccinated). Presumably a bit less with the new Delta variants but so far still good.
In the end, vaccinated athletes should be more or less safe from the virus (again, barring new variants changing things). Sports leagues probably need to mostly just let vaccinated players play, perhaps with some limitations.
As for unvaccinated athletes, there’s not really any reason to bother trying to protect them if they refuse to protect themselves.
