Omaha on a budget?

Post by mtnvandy »

Gents et al,
Can anybody give me an estimate of what it would cost to catch 2-4 CWS games?

Price is very much a factor.

Will be flying from FLA so that will obvo be a major cost.

Any suggestions re decent campgrounds?

Is a rental car essential (car prices in fla r cray cray post covid fyi)

Regards,

MtnVandy

My experience is if you wait till the finals availability of rooms within walking distance increase and price drops.dramatically so strategy us get refundable airplane ticket for finals weekend and pick up a last minute hotel..you do not need a rental car: plenty of hotels and restaurants around stadium. It is worth the trip if VU makes finals

As long as you're not staying in, say, Lincoln or Des Moines, a rental car is not necessary. The airport is very close to the downtown area where the ballpark is, and there are plenty of rooms available within an easy drive. The hotels closest to TD Ameritrade are expensive, of course, but there are lots of cheaper rooms near the airport or just across the river in Council Bluffs. The downtown area is super walkable and there are lots of restaurants.

Yeah, stay away from rental right now. It will run you $150 a day or more (not counting insurance) for the smallest thing they have.

It depends on who is there.
If you have Arkansas, LSU, and MSU, you better wait for some of those to go home. There are some less expensive hotels on the airport side of the river, but that leaves you with transport issues.

As mentioned, Finals are relatively cheap and easy. I have been to two of them, stayed a short walk from the ballpark and didn't need a car for anything. Last time I bought tickets for $50 eight rows behind home plate. The previous game, I was walking up to the park and a local gave my son and I a pair for the VA final. Of course, we would have to get there.

Thanks for the input.
Have never seen VU play in any ncaa Post season event.
Only post season was a cpl stinker sect bball games.

(When we drew Sienna in rd 1 of the ncaat in Tampa ( circa 2009), I bought second round tix ( gave them to a bama fan) after the crayons colored us & our soft Aussie post player.)

The refundable plane tix deal is great idea. Great intel re no rental car & council bluffs.

Thinking will plan to go if VU or Ole Miss makes the last 4 in.....stay till they r both gone or crowned.

Thank again Maniacs!!

Speaking of rentals, my wife and I are going to Yellowstone Labor Day week. We secured a rental in January for a little over $500 for a week. Another friend just booked his trip for the same week. Rental for a compact was $175 a day.
The first of August my family is going to Dauphin Island South of Mobile for a week. My stepdaughter is flying in from DC to Pensacola. She looked into a rental for 5 days and it was $1200 for the compact.
Others going to Hawaii are renting Uhauls instead of cars as they are a third of what a car is.
Rentals have gone nuts.

On the other hand, my son had a really nice 2 year old Honda and a Toyota dealer gave him almost what he paid for it new. Not on trade. Cash on the barrel-head.

About a month ago I looked at a one-way rental of a sedan from Huntsville to North Carolina for next week. It was $700/day! I could get a chauffeur for that price. Or several first class airline tickets.

Last year my 2015 Infinity was worth $18,000 on cars.com. Today, with 12,000 more miles, the same 2015 is selling for $21,000. That is crazy. Apparently the chip shortage is resulting is a new car shortage.

TMI... Just took my family on a 10 day vacation in a rental through Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico and Oklahoma. We did manage to get a big ole SUV and for only about $750, and we put about 4,000 miles on that baby.

However, we made the reservations in mid April, since I sort of foresaw that it was going to be so difficult to get a rental this summer!

My experience there was great. There is casinos with rooms available in Council Bluffs. I either had room comped or got very inexpensive rates there. For game tixs I bought General admission outfield seats for about $10 and walked around to sidelines and sat in unoccupied seats. My ideas for Omaha on a budget...

If we drove or rent a car is the parking at the stadium free as it is in Hoover, or is a pay to park?

Parking is not free, but it's not terribly expensive.

From our experience in 2019, some of the hotels also run free shuttles to the ballpark. We rented a car then, but ended up only needing it to get to and from the airport. You can definitely get by without one.

Can confirm. People reserve rooms in the hopes that their team makes the final pairing, but obviously 3/4 of the teams do not. So both the tickets and hotel rooms suddenly free up en masse. In 2019 the whole outfield was local Omaha residents brought in to swell the crowd and make the stadium look full.

The flipside of waiting to see if they make the Finals is that last-minute (or refundable) flights are much more expensive, at least from here. With that said, if you wanted to see the 'Dores play in the CWS but not bank on the Finals, how would you plan it? Go mid-week for 2-3 days, after some teams have already left (hopefully not including us)? Or do you really need to be there all week to account for weather delays, unknown schedule, etc.?
