OT: Inconsistency of umps

Post by Golddore68 »

Willie Daunic was talking about this on 102.5-FM’s afternoon show last week.

When the count is 3-0 on a batter, no matter where the next pitch is thrown, unless it is in the dirt or way over the batter’s head or way outside or thrown at the batter, the ump calls it a strike. That’s a given. It might be a little inside, outside, low or high, but on a 3-0 count, the batter is going to take the pitch, the ump’s going to call it a strike.

But if the pitcher throws that exact same pitch on a 3-2 count, sometimes it has to be precisely in the strike zone to get the strike call. If it’s a little inside, outside, low or high, it’ll be called ball four.

Willie, who played baseball and basketball for Vanderbilt in the ‘90’s, said that used to drive him crazy. If a slightly low pitch is a strike on a 3-0 count, that exact same pitch should also be a strike on a 3-2 count.
