SEC midpoint standings

Can anyone confirm that the SEC Baseball Tournament will have the same format as last year's? If so, finishing among the Top 4 seeds is paramount.

Seeds 13 and 14 are out. Don't bother going to Hoover.

Seeds 5 through 12 play on Tuesday in a Win-or-Go-Home game. We don't want to be seeded any lower than #4.

Then the remaining 8 teams go into a modified double-elimination starting on Wednesday.

Tournament seeds as of the midpoint (without tiebreaker consideration):

CONTENDERS
1/2 ....... 11-4 ... Vanderbilt and Arkansas
3/4/5 ..... 10-5 ... Tennessee, South Carolina, Mississippi State

At least one of those 5 teams will have to play on Tuesday.

WAITING IN THE WINGS
6/7 ........ 9-6 ... Florida, Ole Miss

OUTSIDE CHANCE FOR A BYE?
8/9/10 ..... 7-8 ... Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama

STRUGGLING TO STAY IN THE TOURNAMENT
11/12/13 .. 4-11 ... Missouri, LSU, Texas A&M

DEAD IN THE WATER
14 ........ 2-13 ... Auburn

You have South Carolina on there twice: @ 10-5 (correct) and @7-8 (incorrect). The other 7-8 should be Alabama. You also have Ole Miss twice at 10-5 and 9-6. They are 9-6.
Otherwise good info to have.

Thanks, Commadore

I fixed it.

Even though Vanderbilt is off to a great start, you can see that we have to keep the foot down. A second half of 9-6 or even 10-5 doesn't guarantee a Top 4 finish with such strong competition.

At least we have a head-to-head tiebreaker so far against Tennessee and South Carolina. Must take care of Mississippi State this weekend.

Yeah, and 10 of our last 19 games are against top 20 teams. That counts one against Louisville. UT's schedule is considerably easier. We just have to be better.

With our schedule, 9-6 will be a perfectly fine second half. We might lose a series and can't count on sweeps. If we win 20 and are not in the top 4 then we will have to deal with it, but can never be disappointed with 20 conference wins.

My guess is that Coach Corbin would not agree with that.
Every game the VandyBoys have left on their schedule is eminently winnable, especially after our still injured players return.

Speaking of standings, though slightly OT because it’s technically rankings...
Can anyone figure how/why MS St leapfrogged VU in the national rankings this week after an (easily) arguably WORSE overall performance in a HOME series against a LESSER team than UT??? I mean, great to get them at home this weekend for the chance to prove pollsters wrong.

I assume you’re referring to baseball America’s rankings, which actually had us as 6 last week. Every other poll, including the coaches poll, has us at 2. The reason baseball America has us lower is (purely speculation) that they literally hate Vandy and look for any excuse to drop us every year.

Thanks for clarifying! Overlooked the source and didn’t check multiple rankings.

No coach wants to lose any games. Nobody is happy after a loss. But its baseball. Nine wins in 15 games is .600 winning percentage. With our upcoming schedule, that would be a good record. It's baseball. Coach Corbin often uses unproven guys in tough situations to see how they perform so that they are prepared for Omaha should we get there. Perfect example is Little on Sunday at UT. Of course he wanted to win the game and knew that it was UT, but his foresight is unmatched.

Just a hunch, but I am guessing that we will see Parker Noland in left field soon. I honestly would not be surprised if its tonight. When Kolwyck comes back, our best lineup would be Noland in left. Davis so far is not having a great year and seems to have lost his legs which were his best weapon. Point is, Corbin would try it before TK is back to see how Noland looks in left. Might not be best chance to win the game bc someone else will have to play second, but eyes are on getting to Omaha.

A SEVEN-WAY TIE for first place ...

... is unlikely but possible depending on the results of this weekend's series.

IF:
Mississippi State wins 2 of 3 at Vanderbilt
Arkansas loses 2 of 3 at South Carolina
Tennessee takes 2 of 3 at Texas A&M
Florida sweeps at Auburn
Ole Miss (home) sweeps LSU

VU, MSU, Ark, SC, UT, Fla and Ole Miss would each be 12-6.

Meanwhile, D1Baseball posted a projected Field of 64 this week:

Kentucky among the First 5 Out and Alabama among the Last 5 In. The teams could swap positions as UK hosts 'Bama this weekend.
