Win today over UIC

Post by charlestonalum »

15-0 triumph. They got 2 hits and we had 16 hits but a couple of errors. This is a good team. Schultz was strong on mound through 5.

If we can manage to get 3-4 runs per game, we'll win most series.

Considering COVID we seem to be in good shape physically and mentally - not surprised with Corbin in charge

Pitching is exceptional this year, walks are waaaaay down from where they normally have been.
Hitting is coming around, though the pitching VU has seen thru the first 8 games has not been very good, and they have left a lot of runners on base.
Base running has been excellent, none of the bonehead plays running into dumb outs like we've seen too often in recent years.
Defense has been good...with one exception. Gonzalez is a throwing error waiting to happen on every ball hit his way, and he's shown no evidence that he can field a bunt and throw a runner out at first. The guy is hitting very well and is clearly an overall positive for this team, but his defense is eventually going to cost this team.

Re: Jayson Gonzalez

I like Jayson and he certainly can hit, but those errors can hurt. 3 errors in 10 chances!

(Extremely low no. plays at third to date, perhaps due to power Vanderbilt pitchers versus predominantly RH hitters.)

Parker Noland started 14 games last season and made only 1 error in 34 chances (.971 fldg pct.).

Gonzo made 5 errors in 34 chances (.853) in 2019 and 9 errors in 73 chances (.877) in 2018. That’s extremely poor.

Coach knows his players and Jayson has excellent range in the field, but he’s got to cut down on the errors.

I would like to see Noland get some starts at 3B even if just to keep him sharp if Gonzalez goes down.
