Something reasonable regarding eligibility from NCAA????
Always hopeful; rarely optimistic. @GAD

Don't think it would benefit Vandy baseball very much. Our guys usually go pro as soon as possible. It probably would benefit our SEC brethren more than us.

NCAA overlooking the STUDENT ...

Post by Versus75 »

... in Student-Athlete.

After preaching that these are amateurs who have used their athletic abilities to get an education, the NCAA may give every participant another year to play his sport while in college.

The vast majority of the best athletes — the ones who turn pro — do so after less than 4 years of college. The vast majority of the worst students (I include myself in this category) take 5 or 6 years to graduate.

The colleges are giving a full ride to many of these kids for up to 5 years as it is. With the tutoring and other perks (especially for UGA and UNC basketball players), they should leave with a Master’s degree.

And then get on with their lives doing something other than playing pro sports.

There should be NO bonus eligibility for winter sport athletes whose season was nearly over anyway.

There should be NO sixth season for spring sport athletes.

The only viable option I see is to allow spring sport student-athletes to count this as a redshirt season if they haven’t already had a redshirt year.

And push through that immediate transfer plan that has been kicked around. Then, if a baseball player isn’t still a good fit for his team he can find another place to play. (I believe that is already the case for other spring sports.)

As the article states, they'll have to expand rosters. It'll create a backlog of talent for a few years but seems like a small price to pay to make sure those who didnt play this semester get the chance for one more year.

I agree, but the juniors at least have options and leverage with pro baseball. The drafted juniors before have signed because seniors have no leverage on their signing bonus. Guys like Martin, Brown, and Hickman will go anyway, but Cooper Davis and Hugh Fisher could improve their stock with a productive healthy season.
