Roster announced...

Post by Versus75 »

... on vucommodores.com

https://vucommodores.com/roster.aspx?path=baseball

40 players at this time.

Catcher ....... 2 plus Stephen Scott and Dominic Keegan listed as Utility
Infield ....... 7 plus Martin, Malcom and Malloy listed as Utility
Outfield ...... 7 plus the aforementioned Stephen Scott
RH Pitcher ... 12
LH Pitcher .... 7
Utility ....... 5

Still need to figure out how to get down to 35 (partial) scholarship players, I believe, and then see who is ready to play. The D1baseball.com projected starting lineup and pitching rotation did not list any freshmen, but I'm certain at least a few will be major contributors. And don't forget Jayson Gonzalez as a possible platoon with Harrison Ray at the hot corner.

Tomorrow marks one month before Opening Day!

I haven't heard any reports from practice, but I am surprised that Paul is penciled in by D1 as the starting SS. I assumed some freshman would take over, whether or not he could hit a lick. In any event I'm guessing it's going to be nearly impossible to duplicate Kaiser's D at that position. He was super. The difference between Kaiser and Paul defensively, though, would seem to be huge.

We've got some bats, that's for sure, particularly if Infante is out of his funk.

Paul at SS was the thing that jumped out at me, as well. To me, Paul's arm has been too suspect over the years to play shortstop. I would think it's more likely that Austin Martin will be at short and Paul will remain at second, unless as you suggest, a freshmen ends up at short.

I noticed that Alonzo Jones wasn't on the roster. Then I googled him and saw that he had been drafted and signed by Oakland -- 25th round, signed for $65K. I somehow missed that last year. Did he have another year of eligibility remaining? He was one of those players who never quite lived up to his potential. I was super-excited when he signed with us. One of the fastest Dores we've had. Said in his Vandy bio that he ran a 6.17 60 in high school. That's really, really, really good.

I have s silly question:

What happens to the 5 players who don't make the 35?

Is it a case of "oops, sorry, we over-recruited, you'll need to move on", or is it a little more forgiving than that?

He did have a year of eligibility left.

That's probably $60K more than he would have gotten following a senior season, especially if he didn't get more playing time.

Interesting stats show that Alonzo only played 6 games for his rookie league team. Three starts in center field and three games off the bench, perhaps as a pinch-runner:

You may check on any other Vanderbilt draftee (except those who transferred before being drafted, such as Mark Prior) dating back to 1971. I guess no 'Dores were drafted 1965-1971:

He is one of the rare cases of a kid in our program who did not improve. We never really found a spot for him defensively, and he seemed to lose confidence in his own hitting. Despite his elite speed, he was not an elite base runner.
I wish him the best as he has some athleticism and the bat was solid as a freshman.

Would love to see an Antoan Richardson like career for Alonzo. He’s the best Vandy baseball comp I can think of.

On one hand, if you've got an entire lineup returning, you're hoping they are all a year better and improved. On the other hand, we really struggled at times to string together hits, consistently get onbase, or hit for power.

I agree somewhat, but they were playing much better at the end when Bleday was healthy. He and Scott were really producing at an elite level over the last several weeks, and Demarco was hitting his stride. Duvall hits every time he gets a chance. Get Infante back to his old self and you have a highly productive lineup.

Infante will the one to watch. He has shown signs of stardum but also of misery.

Still no roster update on vucommodores.com.

The total of 40 players includes 14 true freshmen. Must all of them be retained? Can the coaches see a guy who has not lived up to his scouting reports and say, "Don't you think you need to concentrate on your studies because your future isn't in baseball?" Otherwise, some veterans (e.g., Grisanti, Fentress) may get walking orders.

I wonder if the team must name the 35 "active" players to the Southeastern Conference, but the university can remain mum citing some kind of confidentiality reasons.

For a comparison, the other teams in Talking Stick currently show 34-37 on their rosters.
Virginia - 37 (inc. 13 true freshmen) https://virginiasports.com/roster.aspx?path=baseball
Fullerton - 36 (inc. 14 true freshmen) http://www.fullertontitans.com/sports/m ... -19/roster
Texas Christian - 34 (inc. 7 true freshmen) https://gofrogs.com/roster.aspx?path=baseball
