How many games should Derek Mason's team win in 2018 for him to be retained as head coach?

1, as long as it's the UT game.

The day's of thinking like this are long gone. Anything less than 6 wins is a failure now.

6 wins should be more attainable now than in the past for a number of reasons: (1) We have 12 rather than 11 games in which to do it; (2) I-AA teams were rarely scheduled before 2001; now there's one every year, so six wins now is the equivalent of 4 or 5 in a pre-2001 11 game schedule ; (3)the SEC East is nowhere near as difficult as it typically has been; (4) there has been a greater emphasis on non-power 5 teams for OOC games than in the past (we've gotten some really cheap wins like UMass and Old Dominion in this regard); (5) we are in the fifth year of a coach's tenure; he's had ages to recruit, learn from mistakes etc.

Schedule may be slightly easier, swap K-State for Notre Dame, but also swap Bama for Ark. also, will be playing four SEC schools with first year coaches.

so far looks like the majority of us want at least 6 wins and that would get us to a bowl

I can't figure out how to vote on the poll, but I would say 4-5 to be retained. Less than 6 and I will not be happy, but I don't support firing a coach over that. Honestly, the coaching carousel just seems really wrong to me.

These are college kids playing a game and keeping them focused, out of trouble and in school gets a lot of credit from me. We were in a position from a talent and coaching standpoint to have gone 10-2 this year. A few good breaks or a few fluke plays or some different calls and we could have been. Kids have bad days. They make occasional bad plays. It happens. Look at Alabama and Georgia against Auburn this year. It's a game, a gambit, a series of chances. It is not a definite outcome no matter what you do. Accept that. Look at the improvement in recruiting. The improvement in public relations. The way he has has handled discipline and attitude and inspired effort. As long as those things are done well, I would not fire a coach over a 4-5 win season. To do so is like betting at the roulette wheel by switching to whatever color came up on the last spin. You are just chasing chance.

Part of the problem this year is we really were not competitive in so many games. I know we are supposed to be way past the moral victory stage, and I certainly am. I can live with blowouts to AL and GA, but we were crushed by Ole MS and Missouri, and the Kentucky game was over in the 3rd quarter. Those represented a much larger step back from 2016 than the 5vs 6 win differential would indicate.

Not sure I understand your take on us having the talent for a 10-2 year. "A few good break........we could have been". Oh my we got blown out almost every game from Alabama until Mizzo(not including W.Ky & SC)

6 and I wouldn't be too happy but I could understand keeping him.

We need a solid 8-win-type season to solidify CDM is successful. A 6-6 season and a loss in a bowl again makes us 6-7, another losing season. That would be unacceptable.

We need to win three of our nonconference games and we need a winning record in the SEC, 5-3. That would put us on the same level we were at with Franklin before he took off for Penn State and Mason took over. If Franklin could achieve that level of success two years in a row with the same level of talent than Mason should be able to or we need to find a coach who can.

We should be competitive in our SEC games, not blown out against even the lower echelon teams like Ole Miss, Missouri and Kentucky.

Maybe he is thinking of 2016, where we were 12 (?) points from winning the East. If we got lucky every week that season, we could have easily been 11-1 (8-0 SEC) and gone to the Sugar Bowl after getting killed by Bama in the SEC Championship Game.

It is going to be very difficult for CDM to win even 5 games next year. Our defense was horrible this year and we lose a ton of starters & significant back up to graduation. Who in the world is going to step up? If they were that good they would have been playing. Our DB's will be the only position not affected as much. I know we swap Bama for Ark, but look who we play as an OOC team....Notre Dame!!! Unless the SEC sucks next year we will be hardpressed to even win 5...

Well, the defense can't get much worse. I think it'll be a little better.

I don't explicitly disagree, but I disagree a little bit. Every year we try to do this with the schedule and you just never know a lot of times. Plus timing of a schedule plays a huge part. I remain convinced that if we had played Florida in the usual early November spot this year we would've beaten them. They were completely off the rails by then.

I would not have pegged Georgia at 11-1 this year or Florida with their record, nor Tennessee with their record. I say all of this to say that I am not going to cut slack for how hard the schedule may or may not be. This year the schedule was perfectly accomodating to get 6 wins and maybe even up to 8 or 9 considering we won 5 and had losses to Kentucky, USCe, Mizzou and Ole Miss.

You missed the gist of comment......We had a horrible defense and lose by VU standards some great players. With no one in the wings, next year could be a disaster!!

If you switched the dates of the Florida and Mizzou games, we probably go 7-5.

Well this season is a failure but don't you agree that 5 wins with one of them being UT is much better than 5 wins with one of them not being UT?

Agreed 100%. Very different flavor.
