Better to decommit before signing than to sign and then ask for a release:

Will you let me go?

He's already entered the portal?

We had at least 3 or 4 of these de-commits last recruiting season, and still came out just fine. One of them, B.J. Diakite, ended up re-committing and signing at the last minute, on signing day.

Sign of the time. Your commitment is month to month, at best season to season with kids nowadays

Can we at least admit two things though?

1) The same applies to adults and their commitments
2) Its strange that we ask kids to commit to making a college choice in the spring of their junior year and expect them to hold true to that commitment all the way through to February when they sign their LOI. And its the adults that have made this strange system. Many non-athlete college seniors have just recently locked in their college choice.

There is a lot of growing and developing that happens in the senior year (and junior year) when young people are in college. It won't happen because the adults want what they want and the demands of running a multi-billion dollar amateur business (insert sarcasm), but it would be great if the student-athletes had more opportunity have more time like their non-athlete counterparts.

Time out. No one forced this kid to commit this early. He did, then he backed out a month later. That's ridiculous.

Sure, no one put a gun to his head and made him do it. But I'm sure we cajoled him into doing it. That's part of the deal and coaches have been doing it forever. It goes like this. "We really like you. Your tape is awesome. You're everything we want in a player. But look, we're only going to take X number of guys at your position and we think we're going to fill those slots real soon. If you want to be here then we need to get your commitment. What do you say?" And all of college football has been built on the game working that way. It puts the kids in a position where they sometimes feel as though they have to commit early or miss out.

The coach's job is to create urgency for the recruit to secure the commitment. If a kid walks away from that then so be it. I have even more understanding if they're walking away this early. Its when it happens really close to signing day that it hurts a program.

But I'll always go back to the point that I make which is that we as adults should not get too worked up about where a kid decides to go to college. Or more so, we shouldn't get worked up if a kid changes their mind on where they want to go to college. Being a college capable athlete does not mean a teenager is not subject to the same feelings around indecision.

Randolph committed to UNC after a weekend visit there... seems to be the impulsive type! We'll see if this commitment sticks.

If you're saying that no one forced him at gunpoint to commit, then, yes, I agree. However, to say that these 16 and 17 year old kids aren't directly and indirectly pressured to commit by those who recruit them is either naive or intellectually lazy.

A 17 year old changed his mind about where to go to school.
The only thing that makes this an issue is all of us middle aged men obsessing about where 17 year olds choose to go to school.

He's an adolescent and he's acting like one.
In theory we are the grown ups here - but when we put on our football fan personas we don't always act like it.
