All eleven of Vandy's 2022 FBS opponents are bowl-eligible this year

Post by BrentVU »

If you want to get a jump on scouting Vandy's opponents for next season, four of them will be in action Saturday in conference championship games...

11 am: Kent State (7-5) vs. Northern Illinois (8-4), MAC Championship, Detroit
3 pm: Alabama (11-1) vs. Georgia (12-0), SEC Championship, Atlanta
7 pm: Wake Forest (10-2) vs. Pittsburgh (10-2), ACC Championship, Charlotte

I read this morning that 84 teams are bowl-eligible this season, and there were only 82 slots (41 bowls)... so the powers that be hurriedly arranged another bowl (the San Francisco Bowl) so that all 84 could have a spot. One of the last teams to qualify was Hawaii (6-7), Vandy's opening opponent next season. That means all 11 of Vandy's opponents for next year are bowl-eligible this year (eight SEC teams, Wake, Northern Illinois, and Hawaii).

Then there's FCS Elon, who finished 6-5 and won't be participating in the postseason. But I don't think we need to worry about that one since we always are superior to FCS teams, right?

Just one quick point of minor clarification. There was supposed to be a 42nd bowl game in San Francisco this year, the Redbox Bowl, but it was cancelled at the start of the season. The new bowl game will be played somewhere in the Dallas area, possibly in Frisco, TX...which is confusing because, of course, it's nowhere near San Francisco. And there's already another bowl game there.

Congratulations to Andy Ludwig, whose Utah team won the Pac-12 championship game Friday with a 38-10 win over Oregon. Ludwig did a great job with QB Cam Rising, who continually found receivers in open spots. Rumors are circulating that Auburn, which just fired OC Mike Bobo, might be after Ludwig for that spot (he would be reunited with Derek Mason).

Meanwhile, it sounds like Miami may be very interested in Mario Cristobal, but the Ducks are going to try to lock him up with an extension. Oregon finished 10-3, but those two late losses to Utah were embarrassing. Oregon had a win over Ohio State this season but had a loss to Stanford, which finished 3-9.

Way too many bowl games; case of "Importance" dilution!

That doesn’t bode well for a winning record next season considering the SEC schedule is going to be as tough as possible. Vanderbilt’s conference schedule will include not only all the East Division teams that finished above them, but the top two from the West.
