Re: Alumni no longer allowed to use VU libraries on weekends

Since I found the outrage curious, I submitted a question via the link Dores137 provided and asked if there were weekend restrictions to alumni library access. I received a response in less than 5 minutes: "Alumni are welcome all hours that library is open. You will need a new proximity ID car...

Story about VU alum who probably died in a Soviet gulag

Grew in in Nashville, graduated from East High School, did 2 years in the engineering school and then went off to war: https://www.williamsonherald.com/features/w_life/the-missing-pilot-and-the-old-pennies/article_fe0abe20-3dd6-11ee-a616-0f0eada8a7a2.html I'm posting it here because I don't think ei...

Re: Alumni no longer allowed to use VU libraries on weekends

The thing is.. The murder rate in Nashville is far less now that It was in the early 1970s, and it is also far less now that it was when I was an RA in Barnard Hall in 1986 -- when my dorm had no security, and it was not unusual for me to have to run the homeless out of the lounge. Those of us who w...

Re: Alumni no longer allowed to use VU libraries on weekends

You're welcome to drive down to the campus if you don't believe me. It may be that I always had delusions about my alma mater, but over the years I've learned to see things more clearly. I was trying to research an article which I'm writing for a local paper about a Vanderbilt alumnus who was shot d...

Re: Alumni no longer allowed to use VU libraries on weekends

Don't know. The door is locked, and I was able to talk them into buzzing me in. But once I got in with my son they made it pretty clear that I couldn't use the facility. They told me to come back Monday -- when I obviously won't be able to show my son all the nooks and crannies of the library that I...

Re: Alumni no longer allowed to use VU libraries on weekends

I used to have season football tickets and went to bowl games in Memphis, Birmingham, Shreveport and Houston, but I've gotten worn down over the years by many things such as this.

I was still thinking about taking my son to the Hawaii game, but this HAS decided me.

Alumni no longer allowed to use VU libraries on weekends

Over the years I've used Vanderbilt libraries a lot. I just took my youngest son down there to research something and was turned away at the Heard library. A security guard posted near the door told me that alumni are no longer allowed to use the VU libraries on weekends (when parking is easily foun...

Strange time to be playing a football game against Hawaii

... only a few weeks after the worst thing that's befallen that state since before it became a state, I suppose.

Re: So fact or fiction?

I suppose this is a good time to mention that the Unicoi county town of Erwin was originally called VANDERBILT, because they were trying to get George Vanderbilt to build his big house there. After George chose Asheville, North Carolina, the town went with Erwin. True story. I've got the original to...

Re: Preseason all-SEC teams announced

With the SEC expanding again next year, it won't be long until a player from the SEC makes all-American, but not all-SEC.

Re: The Athletic (premium): VU Chancellor Harvie Branscomb proposed a "Magnolia League" in 1962; it went nowhere

This isn't new by any means. In fact, there is a chapter about this in my book, called "Harvie Versus the Football Team." I wrote the book in 2002 and published it in 2003. I got the information from Branscomb's 1978 memoirs, called "Purely Academic: An Autobiography." He referre...

Does anyone know what's up with Zach Cunningham?

He's only 28, and a case can be made that he is one of the all time greats to ever come from Vanderbilt.

(Who can ever forget his tackle that beat Georgia? My God I love watching that play!)

He's been a free agent since February, when the Titanics cut him.

Re: Big transfer pickup: P Sawyer Hawks from Air Force

I read an article on the kid from LSU while at the Air Force Academy. It stated that after 3 years the cadets were committed to a stint in the service. His coach went to him and told him he would be making a mistake to stay as he had millions waiting for him. Let's hope Hawks got the same advice. M...

I'm actually surprised that you can transfer out of the service academies after your sophomore year, since they changed ROTC scholarships to require commitment after your freshman year in the mid 1980s!

Re: So who is everyone pulling for.....

I've been pulling for the SEC my whole life, but now that the SEC is taking on Texas and Oklahoma and will consist of 16 teams, I can't do it anymore. With 16 teams, many of which were hand picked because they ARE huge schools that overemphasize athletics, the SEC SHOULD dominate all sports. At this...

Re: Here are your 2024 opponents

To many of us who grew up in the 10-team SEC, this obviously no longer even feels like an SEC schedule. We don't play EITHER Mississippi team OR Georgia OR Florida. Alabama won't play either Mississippi team either in 2024. Auburn doesn't play LSU. They need to just change the name of the conference...

Re: NIL vs IRS

It's amazing to think that an "institution of higher learning" could have even conceived the notion that an NIL could be set up as tax exempt.

I mean... obviously this is supplemental endorsement income.

Along the main focus of this thread, I think we can safely say that Johnny McCrary was an incredible bust as an SEC quarterback, although he may be a fine man for all I know.

Re: The Athletic (premium): Best signee, biggest bust etc. in VU recruiting history

I feel like there's a gray area between "pre-internet era" and "modern era." Chris Young and Jimmy Williams were both huge recruits in the mid-to-late 1990s. Is that pre-internet? I know the internet was around then, but was it as influential pre-social media? Or are they consid...
