Over a century of tradition:

1913: A 33-yard penalty for punching

Vanderbilt pulled out a 7-6 win with a timely break. Its game-winning TD was set up by a 33-yard unsportsmanlike penalty — half the distance to the goal, according to The Tennessean — called on Tennessee player S.D. Bayer for punching Vanderbilt’s Martin Chester.

Bayer, whom the Tennessee yearbook dubbed “a born fighter,” was ejected by referee Bradley Walker, a prominent Nashville attorney.

On the next play, Vanderbilt’s Hord Boensch tossed a 35-yard TD pass to Enoch Brown, and the extra-point kick won it. The Commodores escaped and improved to 11-0-1 in the series.
