Jackson, Miss.: Ole Miss football is trying not to overlook Vanderbilt. That's easier said than done.

Post by BrentVU »

"Hmm," [Ole Miss DL Sam] Williams said. "They're physical. Um, I mean, we watched some, but we haven't really picked up tendencies or anything. I mean, the run, the goal line, they're physical on the goal line. We've got to step up on the goal line. That's all I can say right now."

One can excuse No. 10 Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2 SEC) for not using the first two days of Vanderbilt week to dive deep into film on the Commodores.

Vanderbilt (2-8, 0-6) hasn't won an SEC game since 2019 and hasn't won an SEC road game since 2018. The Commodores rank last in the SEC in scoring offense, total offense, total defense, passing offense, passing defense, first downs per game, third down conversion rate, sacks, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, tackles for loss and kickoff return average.

If an SEC team was as all-around good as Vanderbilt is all-around bad, it would likely be the first college team with a legitimate shot at competing against the NFL's worst teams...

The Tipico sportsbook has the Rebels as 36.5-point favorites against Vanderbilt. The Rebels were only 14-point favorites to beat Tulane earlier this fall. According to research by The Action Network, there have only been four games since 1980 where a team favored by 36.5 or more points lost outright. No SEC team has lost a game favored by more than 30 points since 2012.

No one is saying Ole Miss is going to sleepwalk its way through this game. But with a Mississippi State team peaking at the right time looming on the schedule five days later, it would be easy for the Rebels to take this one a little easier...

Sigh... We are TERRIBLE in almost ALL phases of the game. :(

If they truly want to make this interesting and competitive, Ole Miss should agree to (at least) one of the following conditions:
- No more than 8 men on the field at a time on offense or defense.
- 3 downs instead of 4
- Perhaps Corral agrees to not open his eyes on on at least one play per series
- No pass routes over 25 yards
- No rushing the QB or at least a 5 M-I-S-S-I-S-S-P-P-I rush (see what I did there).

I think that could get the line to about 7 to 10 points. It will get better ... but probably not this year.
