That Southern Miss team that kept us from NYC was loaded for a mid-major. Had transfers from Bama, etc.
The crowd they brought to our gym from that far away was amazing. And they did win it all in NYC.

86 USM fans were A holes
Dyk they ( the fans not USM players) cut down the nets in OUR gym?
I was standing with a couple VUFB lineman….they discussed how wrong it was and seemed to be considering corrective action….(but did not)
I believe this was the last game of my all time fav VUMBB player- BOBBY WESTBROOKS

We were sitting in 1L close to the basket and saw no such net cutting incident.
Why would any team cut down the nets after a quarter-finals game anyway?
Interesting note: That Southern Miss team also had an NIT win over Ole Miss and regular season wins over Virginia Tech (x2), Cincinnati (x2), Louisville, South Carolina, Memphis
I thought the NIT game vs uut in Fogler's first season was actually louder. It was deafening.

I missed that UT game. Was on spring break. Really amazing that an NIT game and a bunch of players that the crowd had grown to know and love would generate that much interest. Pretty sure those games were sold out. But can’t remember for certain.

That UT game was great. Came back from 17 down. Of course, Wade Houston was coaching, so maybe it wasn't such a big deal....
Lot of unhappy mouth-breathers that night.

From a 25 year look back:
“ After shooting 62 percent in the first half and racing to a 54-36 halftime lead, USM seemingly had Vandy on the ropes. But the Commodores had other ideas and sparked by the play of 7-foot center Will Perdue, battled back to tie the game at 60-60. But Fisher responded by hitting a 3-pointer to give USM the lead at 65-64 with 13 minutes remaining and the Eagles never looked back. Perdue led Vandy with 34 points and 14 rebounds, but in addition to Fisher's 21 points, the Eagles got 26 points and eight rebounds from Keys and 21 points from John White.”
To this day the gym during that 18 point come back is the loudest I remember ever hearing that gym. And I was there for UNC, Indiana, #1’s UT, Florida, and Kentucky. I’m sure some of it is amplified by nostalgia. But it was awesome. An NIT game.

It doesn't mention who New Orleans was coached by. He later ended up pretty famous.
