Re: Garrido

Baseball will never be the gravy train that football or basketball will be at the collegiate level, but Garrido was the patriarch of his era. An era which allowed college baseball to become the top dog in late June, as the NBA and NHL champions were nursing their hangovers. Nationally televised games, a piece of the TV contract pie for conference baseball, televised non-game events such as the NCAA Tournament Selection Show and MLB draft, college baseball's evolution from a novelty game with comically large bats played at a snail's pace to a sport with a pace and scoring output that barely trails that of the Major Leagues .... the list goes on.

I hope people recognize what college baseball was when Garrido began his journey as a college head coach, against what it was just a couple years ago when he said goodbye to it. We indirectly benefited from him--particularly in exposure--when we won that national championship of ours, which ranks as my #1 Vanderbilt sports moment of all time. College baseball fans all owe the man a debt of gratitude.

As an aside: We went up against his Longhorns how many times? The Jeremy Sowers Super Regional Team (2004?) and obviously our national championship squad come to mind. Were there others?
